BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

Building sustainable communities means renewing persons and institutions to move toward shalom--a vision of peace, prosperity, health, and safety for all.

 Sustainable communities are communities where

 * dialogue, conversation and learning form the model for interaction

* nature provides the model for operations

* economic, social and ecological justice are the norms

* resources are used in a way that assures continued availability for future generations

* women and men of different races and cultures live side by side  in peace, respect one another and participate actively in the institutions and governance of the community

* legal and legislative institutions move beyond adversarial positioning where those with  the most power win to win/win solutions based on community agreement

* the arts are a vibrant part of community life

* the air, is clean, the water pure and the ground fertile

* open space is abundant

* all persons who desire are employed in meaningful work with livable wages

* all persons have access to higher education, holistic health care, adequate shelter and food

* money is reinvested in the community

* businesses create no waste and have zero discharge of pollutants into the air, water or ground, are actively involved with the community in a variety of ways, reinvest profits

* institutions and voluntary associations are committed to maintaining and promoting all of the above.
