In 1990 corporations issued the first large group of corporate environmental reports, many in response to pressure of shareholders as part of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES), formed in 1989 by social investors, religious groups, environmental groups, public pension funds, unions, and public interest groups. The CERES Principles provide a framework for public accountability that includes a commitment to continual progress and an annual CERES report.
