In 1998 CERES initiated a Global Reporting Initiative, GRI,  that evolved rapidly into developing a set of global reporting guidelines for the triple bottom line-social, economic and environmental indicators, or sustainability reporting.  Today increasing numbers of global corporations are issuing reports using these or similar guidelines.   The resulting transparency of activities can increase public trust.   While environmental indicators are reaching maturity, considerable development is needed for indicators of social and economic impact.
