Understanding
of Context: The process of building a new culture of sustainability is not a problem to be solved but an ongoing process of cultural change. It’s a process of creating and claiming a new story that caresses the connections, coherence and community of our cosmos. Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme in The Universe Story (Harper 1992) have set the framework for that story. Beginning with the big bang 13.7 billion years ago, processes started that resulted in galaxies, solar systems, the earth and life as we know it today. The same processes are operative throughout the continually evolving universe. The modern capitalist system, an industrial, global economy, is but a blip at the end of this evolution, yet many of its basic assumptions are counter to processes that brought us into being and sustain us today.
